How To Become a Jedi Master of Recruitment

How to Become a Jedi Master in Recruitment

“These are not the hires you are looking for.”

There is a famous moment in Star Wars where Obi-Wan Kenobi uses a Jedi mind trick to deceive the Stormtroopers into thinking that C3PO and R2D2 ‘are not the droids that they are looking for’. Luckily for the droids, Obi-Wan’s Jedi mind trick worked and they escaped unharmed; but how often, when recruiting, have you been tricked into hiring someone that was not right for your organisation?

Imagine hiring an employee who seemed like the best candidate throughout the hiring process, only for them to become disengaged and demotivated shortly after their start date, ultimately leading to them struggling to fit in and failing to deliver what they promised at interview.

Think how frustrating this can be for your hiring team, who have spent weeks working hard to find the right candidate, only for that employee to leave weeks later. Your bad hire, through disengagement and poor productivity, could also lead to low morale within their team which could result in other staff members leaving to join the dark side… I mean your competition.

Unlike in Star Wars, this is not one of Obi-Wan’s Jedi mind tricks deceiving you. The candidate might have been the best person throughout the recruitment process and, should they have gone to a different company, would possibly have excelled at a different organisation. The problem here could be that your hiring process is not attracting the right people for your organisation. In the same way that the rebel Stormtrooper, Finn, no longer believes in what the dark side fights for, in the Force Awakens, and is eventually recruited by the Resistance (the light side).

To hire the right people, you need to find candidates that align with your company culture. These employees share the same beliefs, values and common goals, and as a result, are more likely to succeed and help your business grow. Therefore, your business needs to ‘Use the Force’ of your company culture during the recruitment process to become the ultimate Jedi Master of recruitment.

Utilising company culture throughout your company’s website, careers page and job adverts will help you to attract the right candidates, and by showing what it’s like to work for you as well as what the company expects from its employees, you can ensure that like-minded people will want to work for you.

Taking the right steps to integrate company culture into your selection and interviewing process will also help to determine whether candidates will align with your values and if they will be a good ‘fit’ for your organisation.

By making sure that you effectively communicate your company culture throughout the entire recruitment process, your candidates, by the time they start, will be able to bond well with your organisation and add value from day one.

With the power of your company culture, not only can you find the ideal candidates that you are looking for, but you will have a team that are so well connected, no Jedi mind tricks could break them.
